BIRMINGHAM, AL — July 14, 2003 — The Messaging Industry
Association’s (TMIA) Unified Communications Committee today
released new results from its research into the relationship between
individuals who have wireless phones and their family communities
using a wireline phone. Today’s results focus on the growth
of wireless voicemail in U.S. Households.
“The new results will confirm the projections of some vendors
and service providers while they will come as a surprise to others
in the communications industry,” said Tom Harper, Executive
Director of TMIA. “What is particularly surprising is to me
is how successful the Wireless Industry has been in increasing the
number of handsets per wireless household.”
| In a random sampling of 1500 online households
across the US, TMIA’s Unified Communications Committee
discovered that: |
| |
- |
71% of households had at least one mobile
phone in the household |
| |
- |
80% of these had voicemail on at least one
mobile phone in the household |
| |
- |
34% of those with mobile voicemail also had
voicemail at home |
| |
- |
Households with mobile phones had an average of 1.71 mobile
phones |
| |
- |
96.1% of mobile households continue to have a home phone |
In addition, it was clear that there is a direct relationship between
mobile-phone usage and voicemail usage. Although voicemail is included
in many mobile phone packages, only 59% of those using mobile phones
one hour or less per month used voicemail, while those who used
their mobile phones more often were more likely to use voicemail
more often. In fact, 94% of users spending over 480 minutes per
month on their phones used voicemail.
Mobile Phones Popular with Adults and Teenagers
The research also uncovered the fact that in households with mobile
phones and teenaged children, more than 50% of those children had
mobile phones.
Survey Methodology
TMIA Unified Communications Committee Members from a host
of companies collaborated to query 1500 random samples across
the US, of which 829 respondents were the actual wireless
subscriber. The committee’s three-pronged approach covered
the following areas: |
| |
1. |
a day in the life of a wireless subscriber
(usage of wireless compared to home phone); |
| |
2. |
the subscriber’s desired relationship
between wireline and wireless; |
| |
3. |
testing concepts for integration of individual
(wireless) and family community (wireline) needs. |
